Class Description:
Freshman English will cover similar topics as Pre-AP Freshman English. At times the pace may be slower, however, students will still be expected to keep track of their assignments, turn in work on time, bring materials to class, and begin learning more advanced approaches to texts.

  • Unit Three: Ender's Game and further examining analytical writing
    1. I can document my ideas while reading using dialectic journals.
    2. I can write insightful interpretations.
    3. I can develop commentary to include both a real life connection and tie-back to my assertion.
    4. I can write a thesis with a correct subject, two to three pieces of described evidence, and a precise opinion.
    5. I can find connections in multiple reading sources and synthesize their information.
    6. I can identify participles and appositives as well punctuate clauses appropriately.
  • Unit Two: Introduction to Argumentative Writing
    1. I can pull textual evidence from a passage to support my reasoning for an argument.
    2. I can read a text for a purpose, annotating my ideas.
    3. I can analyze how different elements of an author’s craft (characterization, figurative language, etc.) create messages.
    4. I can find connections in multiple reading sources and synthesize their information.
    5. I can write persuasive arguments using an assertion, evidence and commentary effectively.
    6. I can write essays to share my ideas with others using a thesis, topic sentences and persuasive arguments.
  • Quiz Retakes (Parts of Speech)
    Students must retake their Parts of Speech Quiz from 8/24 either Thursday morning (8/30) or Friday afternoon (8/31). Students must sign up for the retake by Wednesday.
  • Unit 1: Reviewing Grammar

    1. I can define and identify parts of speech in a text.
    2. I can analyze the impact of specific diction on a text's meaning, style, or tone.
    3. I can use effective word choice to analyze a text with my knowledge of parts of speech.
    4. I can model sentences from well-written examples.
    5. I can collaborate effectively with my peers by staying focused on a task and contributing my own ideas. As a group we can create new ideas, present information, and discuss our opinions.

  • Unit 4: Writing a Personal Narrative

    1. I can analyze how an author's stylistic choices (diction, imagery, figurative language, detail, and syntax) create an effective tone.

    2. I can make effective stylistic choices to create an effective tone in my personal writing.

    3. I can copy-edit my writing for common errors like comma splices, fragments, and subject-verb agreement.

    4. I can make corrections to fix common grammar errors.

    5. I can write an enjoyable personal narrative including a theme, exploded moment, and reflection modeled after published author's techniques.
